Can You Read It?

If you can read this, your brain is 50% faster than those who can’t:

  2. As an English teacher, I must stand up for the importance of spelling…just on principle. (Not that I can spell worth a da*n, but I can use spellcheck.) I’m also a big fan of proper punctuation.

We talked about this in one of my How To Teach classes. Part of the reason we can read the paragraph is because the words themselves are in a context we understand. After a noun, we’re looking for a verb, etc. Because we know the patterns of the language, we’re primed for the words, and it makes it easier to figure them out. Think how hard it is to do those Jumbles puzzles where they give you a scrambled word and you have to figure it out…if they gave you the first letter and a context, it’d be a lot easier to figure out. (says the girl who can’t do those things to save her life. :wallbash: )

I’ll put away my teacher hat now and just say, the human brain is a cool thing.

  4. I knew Kimberly would have an explanation.

I can’t do those Jumbles either. Or Sudoko. Or Rubik’s Cubes. Or PacMan for that matter.

  5. Rhonda, I think the faster you read, the easier it is to read this kind of thing.

Kimberly, that totally makes sense. And my punctuation isn’t great, but spelling is a big deal for me — not that I’m good at it, mind you.

Marilyn, I hate puzzles. All of them — crossword, word search, jumbles. I’m not very good at them and they make me feel stupid, so I don’t do them.
