My friend and I were talking on the phone last night about the difference in Valentine’s Day and our expectations as we come to different places in our lives. When I was a teenager, I desperately wanted one of those satin hearts of cheap chocolates with a plastic rose on top.
When I was first married I still wanted that heart box and flowers. DH usually came through.
Went through a period when I wanted candlelit dinners out and a nice piece of jewelry. That usually didn’t happen.:fryingpan: Now…here’s our pre-Valentine conversation from yesterday:
DH: What do you want for Valentine’s Day? I thougth about sending you flowers but didn’t think you’d want me to spend $60 that way.
Me: Nah. Don’t send me any flowers and I don’t need chocolates. But I know what I’m getting you.
DH: What? You don’t have to get me anything.
Me: Wanna know? I’m going to make you meatloaf and mashed potatoes.
DH: Really? You really are? Hey, that sounds good but what I’d like even more is liver with onions and mashed potatoes.
Me: I can do that.
So…my Valentine’s Day gift to my beloved is liver and onions with homemade mashed potatoes. His gift to me…he’s actually going to come home for dinner instead of working late.
And the really sad part is he’ll be much happier if we just park it in front of the t.v. in our matching recliners and watch Who Wants to Be a Millionaire instead of me forcing him to park it at the dining room table with a couple of candles going.
What are your plans…even if they are unorthodox — well, keep it relatively clean for blog purposese:twisted:.

Jen, your Valentine’s Day posting made me howl with laughter! Thanks for the morning pick-me-up!

My dh came through with the James Blunt CD I wanted, so I’m happy. :love2:

AC got the heart-shaped candy box and balloon. She’s tickled pink.
DG actually came through this year with an awesome gift: tix to see Billy Joel (he even lined up the babysitter already!). :cooldance:
I have nothing that good to give him–so I went and bought sexy lingerie and will wear it for him (even if I look damn silly in it).
We’re making heart-shaped pizzas tonight (the difference in ‘great dinners’ when you have a 5 year old). Y’all can keep the liver…shudder.
Happy V-day!

Always glad to get a laugh, Steph, and nice to “see” you here.
Oh, Rhonda, that’s nice and thoughtful.
Kimberly, I’m most impressed — especially on the babysitter line-up. Dang. And here’s the thing — you might feel silly in that lingerie but your man is gonna find it far from silly.
and I love the heart-shaped pizzas.

Uh…plans? DB is off tonight, but his first night off after working is usually him struggling to wake up and stay up. I told him I’d like him to make me dinner and spend a nice evening together. If he comes through, we’ll have Hamburger Helper, if not, I’ll end up cooking something.
I do have shaved legs and fancy underthings on today. Might turn out to be a total waste, but I feel pretty.

Andrea, shaved legs? I bet he’ll be awake enough.

The DH renewed my XM radio in the car for me and there was a card on my keyboard when I came into my office this morning.
I bought stuff for his bathroom. Long story — we have a bonus room over the garage that’s his room — office, art studio, music studio, workout room — and it has a full bathroom. I’d put old stuff in there before. But after he got the elliptical trainer he started showering up there too. So for Valentine’s he has a bag with new oversize bath towels and matching hand towels, a new shower scrubby, a pumice thingy to scrub his feet, a tissue box holder, a cup for his toothbrush and toothpaste and a liquid soap dispenser.
And instead of battling the restaurant crowds tonight, we’re grilling rib-eye steaks with all the trimmings including a “bloomin’ onion” sort of appetizer I got at the grocery store. Oh yeah… and blackberry cobbler with vanilla ice cream for dessert. And we’ll probably be watching Who Wants to Be a Millionaire too. :happy2:

Kim H, there’s a lot to be said for sleep. :thankyou:
Sorry, Kimberly, but you’ve got to break out that razor. :fryingpan:
Oh, Marilyn, that’s so nice! I think those thoughtful gifts like renewing the XM or tricking out the bathroom or concert tix or cd — I love the fact that it means the other person really gave it some thought. I love blackberry cobbler. I myself was thinking peach cobbler with vanilla ice cream but the DH asked for banana splits.

Oh, dear. Did someone say banana splits?

Yeah…to chase the liver and onions.

I’m a day late and a dollar short, but I spent the evening with Johnny and Orlando and ate chocolate.
Pretty satisfying to me, actually.

“Johnny…Orlando…chocolate…satisfying.” seems to cover all the bases. :thankyou:

I had an early Valentines celebration.
My husband and I agreed that it was better to spend sometime together instead of going to the trouble of buying each other gifts.
I booked a weekend at Newport RI just for the two of us. I think that is been so far in 13 years the best Valentines gift that I ever have.

Day late & a dollar short too….have no honey. So I watched American Idol, talked to brother & mom. Planning road trip this weekend with 2 brothers & 1 sister and that should be a LOT of fun for us.

Barbara, congrats on your getaway. :cooldance:
I’ve heard that Newport is really lovely. Actually, I confess I have a severe case of New England envy.
Ginger, we watched Idol as well. And I :love2: road trips. That should be a mucho good time.
