On any given day I have a number of cardinals, nuthatches, sparrows, chickadees, woodpeckers, robins, dove, and bluejays visiting the garden pond and the feeder. This morning, however, we had a special visitor. I saw him at the garden pond.

He’s a scarlet tanager and isn’t he lovely? His visit made my day.

Did you just know that or did you have to look him up? I’m clueless beyond the standard 5 birds (cardinals, blue jays, robins…uh…ducks and chickens). I’d just be like - look, a red bird!
I am proud to say that I have a cardinal nest in my dead jasmine vines. There’s two babies in it!

I can identify one more than Andrea–pigeon!
But yeah, I’d have to go with “red bird” on that one.
Oh, I can also name “Free Bird” in 4 notes.

Andrea, I had one visit last year or maybe the year before, so I was pretty sure that’s what he was but I’m geek-girl and I keep two bird identification books in my office for easy look-up.
“Free Bird” in 4 notes :happy2: KImberly! :happy2:

 I forgot about pigeons! Of course the bird I’m most familiar with is the one flipped at me while driving. Not the rarest of species, of course, but I’m always shocked to see it. :P

Ha! I can identify a Carolina chickadee and a bluebird. Matter of fact I have a bluebird nesting in at least one of the houses we put up for them.
That reminds me — I’m going to buy a bird guide too with my gift card. I saw a greenish-brown bird with a red patch on the back of its head at my birdbath last week. I want to know what he is. And there was a bird with black and white markings around it’s neck under the bird feeder yesterday afternoon.
Bird houses, bird bath, bird feeders. Sounds like I have a birdy resort going on here, huh? :happy2:

Andrea! Say it isn’t so — not the finger. :happy2:
Nothing wrong with birdy resorts, Marilyn.

Ooo, I love birds. I’ve got baby blue birds on my porch right now. I hear them howling every time I open the door. My chicadees are gone, but the sparrows, wrens and doves are still around.
And the cursed grackles. HATE grackles.

We’ve had a bird feeder for years and it constanly amazes me the variety of birds that show up there. My favorite was a juvenile red-headed woodpecker we had two years ago, whose mama would feed him while they both stood on the bird feeder. We decided he was just like a teenager. Perfectly capable of feeding himself, but prefered that mama did it for him.
We’ve also added a hummingbird feeder and a finchfeeder. I love birdwatching… I’ll have to watch for the scarlet tanager… cool.

Baby bluebirds — how sweet, Rhonda. I, too, loathe the grackles.
Ellen, you always have great birds coming by to visit!
