Incomparable

Nothing immediately comes to mind that is even close to as good as a tomato fresh out of a garden. We “make do” year round with the hothouse variety but a fresh ‘mater with a little salt and pepper…incomparable.

  1. I know exactly what you mean. I’d sworn that I was going to plant some this year, but alas didn’t get around to it. My Mom did, however, and thankfully she’s willing to share. :cooldance:

  2. Yep, had a plate last week of sliced tomato with mayo and topped with salt & pepper, YUM!

  3. Rhonda, my yard’s too shady but a friend’s mom sent me 4 this week-end.

Uh-huh, Ginger, it’s on my lunch menu.

  4. I’m not a big tomato fan. There’s just something about the squishy inside that I don’t like. Fresh sweet corn from our garden… now that’s heaven.

  5. Mmmm, I love a lettuce and tomato sandwich, topped with plenty of pepper and just a smidge of salt!

Our tiny crop is finally starting to ripen. Another fine reason to make the trek, Jen!

  6. Kira, some garden-fresh Silver Queen runs a close second.

Anna, Anna, Anna, you forgot our favorite. The pork product. Bacon, honey. In fact, that’s lunch today. A BLT. :cooldance:

  9. Yeah, the bacon’s good, Jen, but there’s still something quite heavenly about a tomato sandwich on toasted bread with a little mayo, salt and pepper.

    Mmmm. Great. Now I’m salivating…

  10. I waited on you, Anna!

    They are yummy, Kimh.

Okay, Kris, twist my arm. I’ll have to try it sans lettuce and bacon.

  11. My mom–who supplied the ‘maters–makes the best green tomato casserole. If you’re from the south, you’ve probably had this. For those of you who haven’t, the green ‘maters have a tangy taste, kind of like artichoke hearts. Covered with cheese and buttery cracker crumbs! YUM!

  12. Ah…Raven Hart, you tease, you! We need the full recipe. I grew up eating fried green tomatoes — which I love — but I never had green tomato casserole. Divulge, divulge!! :fryingpan:

  13. I planted a Big Boy plant and now it seems to have some sort of “tomato wilt” disease. There are 2 puny tomatoes on it and no blooms. My cherry tomatoes, however, are thriving. But it’s kinda hard to make a sandwich outta those. :wallbash:

  14. It’s just not the same is it, Marilyn? A cherry tomato sando? :happy2:
