Fair Fun

Last night we went to the fair.

I was going to blow it off. I have a deadline fast approaching and the Moonlight and Magnolias Conference this weekend. Girl is swamped with school projects…all due on Friday. The DH is nearly always working late. I just didn’t see where we had time for a fair. Tuesday afternoon the DH put his foot down. We were taking the time to go Wednesday night because it only came once a year and if we didn’t go then we’d wind up missing it and we weren’t missing it. I wasn’t real happy but I reluctantly agreed.

Thank goodness one of us has some sense. It was the best thing we could’ve done.

Girl invited a friend and her father and I drug around from ride to ride and sat on the bench like old farts and watched them hurl up and down and sideways on rides we used to love to ride but make me feel like throwing up just to watch them now.

We bypassed all the corn dogs and pizza stands to find the food booth run by the Mt. Zion Church where we pigged out on fried pork chops, collard greens, pinto beans, cornbread, homemade cake and sweet tea.

The DH and I held hands and played a couple of those booth games and I actually won a stuffed animal prize which must’ve been rigged because it was throwing a ball in a little hole for points to move your dog toward the finish line and I’m the least coordinated human being on the planet but I actually beat the DH!

We missed the chainsaw carving but we did catch an amazing BMX bicycle stunt show and a really weird dance routine by some older folks. We ran into people we knew (not a bad thing for some of us that spend most of their time in front of a computer).

And of course the four of us had to split a bag of fresh-spun cotton candy and a funnel cake (it is the one time of year that I indulge in funnel cake but I do it.). We brought the candied apples home with us.

Girl’s last words last night, her voice soft and heavy with impending sleep, “Mom, can I have my candied apple for breakfast in the morning?”

  1. A candied apple is still fruit. I say let her have it.

  2. And it’s more fruit than candy. It counts. (This from the person who insists Rice Krispie treats and a glass of milk a wholesome breakfast. It is! Think about it!)

  3. She DID in fact have caramel apple for breakfast.

Hey, I’m with you Kimberly. You’ve just got a little marshmallow thrown in there but it’s basically a bowl of cereal. Go for it!

  4. Sounds like you all had a fun time. We do have to take time out of our schedules for these moments. Last week I went to 2 high school football games where 2 of my nephews played in each. One was a junior varsity and the other was high school. What fun to see my nephews and spend time with 2 different sisters and their kids. I hope you have a terrific Thursday.

  5. I love the fair! DH and I took the girls last Friday. They had a blast - despite the power going off halfway through. At least they weren’t stuck on a ride like some people.

And I agree with you about the rides! I used to be able to take anything - upside down, loop-the-loop, backwards. But watching both my girls twirl around and around made my stomach churn. And don’t get me started about Disney World! Last time we went Sweet Pea was tall enough to ride some of the roller coasters. I used to love those things. I spent the whole ride holding onto her hand for dear life so she wouldn’t fall out. Like that worked better than the industrial strength bar and harness she had on.

  6. I’m glad you had a great time at the fair, Jenn! The DH and I haven’t been in such a long time but the kids went a few weekends ago.

Dramamine is a must if I’m going to ride the rides. Thank God for it’s invention. It sure beats the alternative.

  7. Marshmallows have no fat. Sure, they’re sugary, but everyone puts sugar on Rice Krispies, right?

Bowl of cereal to go, I say. And far tastier.

Now, if you let my MIL make them…not so much. She uses melted Milky Way bars. Yummy, but a girl has to have some breakfast standards, you know.

  8. Ginger, that sounds like such fun! I can hear the high school band on Friday nights if I sit on my front porch.

LOL, I think the hand holding and arm across them is just the mommy instinct. I discovered my intolerance for rides when Girl was a wee thing and I rode the carousel with her and nearly tossed my last meal. A carousel for Pete’s sake.

Kathy, I’m not so sure dramamine could help at this point.

Melted Milky Way Bars? OMG. Yep, you just crossed the line, Kimberly.
