Why I Write Romance

This morning I’m really struggling to find my sunny side. I’m angry. I’m angry about terrorists’ blasts in London. I’m angry about Shasta and Dylan Groene and that anyone, but especially children, are touched by such evil. I’m angry that women endure gang-rape in Pakistan because their fathers, brothers, husbands, and/or male cousins do something stupid (pardon me for not fully comprehending the deterrent factor there).

And in the midst of my seething anger, I realize this is why I write romance. Not because I’m angry, but because we all need to stop and remember that in the midst of all the chaos of our world, there is still goodness and love and light. Today, I need to write that happy ending.

  2. Thanks, Kim. I think a lot of people read to get away from it all. It’s good mental therapy–at least it is for me.

  3. That’s why I think Romance is one of the most underestimated genres in the world. A woman told me the other day that she didn’t read Romances because they weren’t ‘real’. Hell lady, I wanted to say, very little fiction is ‘real’, but at least with our genre, we try lift you up and make you sigh with happiness, even if it is for a little while.

(Oh yeah, I clicked her from Romancing the Blog  Here’s a *HUG* from a stranger in the hopes your day gets better)

  4. Right on, Natasha. Well said. I live *real* every day with an aging mother who needs heart surgery, bills to be paid, deadlines, an endless to do list with finite hours in the day, and local and global news that wearies my heart. You better believe I’m looking for a break from my daily *real* when I pick up a book…or sit down to write one.
